Distributed Recovery with K-Optimistic Logging

چکیده
Fault-tolerance techniques based on checkpointing and message logging have been increasingly used in real-world applications to reduce service down-time. Most industrial applications have chosen pessimistic logging because it allows fast and localized recovery. The price that they must pay, however, is the high failure-free overhead. In this paper, we introduce the concept of K-optimistic logging where K is the degree of optimism that can be used to fine-tune the trade-off between failure-free overhead and recovery efficiency. Traditional pessimistic logging and optimistic logging then become the two extremes in the entire spectrum spanned by K-optimistic logging. Our results generalize several previously known protocols. Our approach is to prove that only dependencies on those states that may be lost upon a failure need to be tracked on-line, and so transitive dependency tracking can be performed with a variable-size vector. The size of the vector piggy-backed on a message then indicates the number of processes whose failures may revoke the message, and K corresponds to the upper bound on the vector size. Furthermore, the parameter K is dynamically tunable in response to changing system characteristics. r 2003 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Efficient Transparent Optimistic Rollback Recovery for Distributed Application Programs
Existing rollback-recovery methods using consistent checkpointing may cause high overhead for applications that frequently send output to the “outside world,” since a new consistent checkpoint must be written before the output can be committed, whereas existing methods using optimistic message logging may cause large delays in committing output, since processes may buffer received messages arbi...
متن کاملRecovery in Distributed Systems Using Optimistic Message Logging and Checkpointing
In a distributed system using message logging and checkpointing to provide fault tolerance there is always a unique maximum recoverable system state regardless of the message logging protocol used The proof of this relies on the observation that the set of system states that have occurred during any single execution of a system forms a lattice with the sets of consistent and recoverable system ...
متن کاملOptimistic Recovery in Multi-threaded Distributed Systems
The problem of recovering distributed systems from crash failures has been widely studied in the context of traditional non-threaded processes. However, extending those solutions to the multi-threaded scenario presents new problems. We identify and address these problems for optimistic logging protocols. There are two natural extension to optimistic logging protocols in the multi-threaded scena...
متن کاملNew Causal Message Logging Protocol with Asynchronous Checkpointing for Distributed Systems
Causal message logging is an efficient approach for tolerating failures of processes in distributed systems because it has the advantages of both pessimistic and optimistic message logging approach. However, traditional causal message logging protocols prevent live processes from executing continuously their computation and require some synchronous logging to the stable storage during recovery....
